Should you develop a new smartphone app?

A lot of small businesses will be asking the question, Should you create a new cellphone app?

An app is a decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly and you really need to think about why you want one for your business. Your customers need to be incentivised to use your app. An app that is nothing more than an advert for your company is worthless to you – so don’t do it. An app that isn’t downloaded is pointless. An app that nobody knows where to get is pointless.

if you’re old enough, think back to when the internet first became popular. Everyone was told they needed a website, but not everyone who bought one knew what to do with it. This is just what is going on now in the app world- people are creating apps that cost them serious amounts of money, and they are useless|absolutely worthless} as nobody knows about them or nobody wants to go near them.

What format should your app be in? Should you choose an an Android App, an iPhone app, a Symbian App, a web app, or no app (Yes, no app really is an option). It’s useful to look at some statistics on phone usage. In April 2011

Google Reported that 350,000 Android phones were activated daily. I can’t see that number going any way but up.

It was reported that the Apples mobile tools were used daily by 90% of those surveyed

Those business types amongst us will know that the Blackberry has a roughly even-stevens market share with IPhone and Android.

Do some research into your market and customer base. There are great statistics online which will let you know whether your target market buy the phone you want to create an app for. There is no point making an iphone app if everyone in your target market has an android phone.

Don’t be wedded to your personal phone you use. Yes, you may really like your phone (you do spend more time with it than your dog/daughter/son) but just because you like, doesn’t mean your target market think the same.

Another point is: Can they buy from you? Can they contact you easily?

Have you ever opened a Christmas present which your uncle gave you ,and you got something that looks fantastic – is absolutely beautiful, but absolutely useless. What would you do with it? Would you have take it everywhere with you? Of course not, so don’t let your app become the white elephant
